When you are locked out

Ask for the full price before anyone is sent, and write it on the sheet. A phone quote is only as good as the details behind it, so say what kind of door and lock it is if you know.

If a car is involved, say so at the start. Not every locksmith works on cars, and it saves a wasted trip.

Changing locks after you buy a home

Keys to a home you have just bought may have been copied by people before you. Rekeying the existing locks, or replacing them, means those old keys no longer open the door.

Ask each locksmith which they would do and why. The rows on brand, model and warranty are there for this job.
